Pregnancy is one of the miracles of nature. Couples who want to get pregnant can go through a roller coaster of emotional and stressful feelings. Getting pregnant does not always happen when you want it to – some can get pregnant easily while with others it can take time. The timing is usually out of your control but when it does happen then you can be in the driver’s seat and take control of your well being.
Your doctor is an important person to have on your pregnancy team. Get a check up with him as soon as you think that you are pregnant and ask him for advice on all aspects of pregnancy. Ask him any question that you may have so that he can alleviate you of any concerns that you may have about your pregnancy and birth of your baby.
There are test that you can purchase from the drug store that can give you a reading of either positive or negative pregnancy but to be absolutely sure your doctor can confirm your condition.
You are in control of your health. Give up any nasty habit – smoking, drinking alcohol, drug taking and eating poorly. Eating a well balanced diet of fruit, vegetables, cooked fresh fish, cereal, grains, nuts, seeds, milk, cheese and meat and avoid spiced, fatty and fried foods can give your body the nutrients that are needed when you are pregnant. You want to give your baby the best chance of being healthy. Also taking vitamins including folic acid is advised, I suggest a multivitamin containing folic acid – capsules are better than compressed tablets as they are more absorbable and the mineral content should be chelated . Check with a health professional about the best vitamins to take while pregnant.
Exercise is another part of keeping healthy while pregnant. Your doctor will know if there is any reason why you should not exercise so check first. Pregnancy puts a lot of stress on your body so gentle exercises such as walking and swimming are the best for your well being.
Caring for your skin during pregnancy can be a challenge. There are many potions and lotions available but the best skin products are the ones that are oil free. They let your skin breathe and also allow moisture to be absorbed from the atmosphere. Keeping hydrated by drinking plenty of water will help your skin, energy levels and help keep you in optimal health
Wear clothing that is lose and comfortable while you are pregnant. Avoid tight fitting clothing around your body especially belts. Proper fitting maternity underwear can help you feel more comfortable – check with a shop that specialises in maternity wear for advice on when to purchase the garments that you will need.
Pregnancy can cause discomfort with heartburn and sciatica. With heartburn look at your diet and do not eat spicey, fried or fatty foods and do drink water especially between meals. Also watch serving size as your stomach is being squashed with the growing baby you will want to eat smaller helpings. Sciatica may be relieved with pregnancy massages. There are spas and massage people who specialise in this type of massage so ask around and give yourself a treat .
Caring for yourself when you are pregnant can be helped by asking others who have been in the same” boat” as word of mouth recommendation is the best sort to get.
